Special Guest: David Ober to Speak to Members at Upcoming Meeting

MYAC will have a special guest at its upcoming meeting this Thursday. David Ober, Representative of the Indiana House of Representative's 82nd district, will speak with the members about the life of an Indiana State Representative. 

Here are some interesting facts about Ober: 

1. He is one of the youngest state Representatives in the state of Indiana. 

2. He is a member of the following legislative committees: Labor, Employment and Pensions (Vice Chairman), Agriculture and Rural Development, Government and Regulatory Reform, and Ways and Means.

3. David Ober is up for re-election this Tuesday. 

We look forward to welcoming our special guest at this upcoming meeting.

MYAC First Official Meeting Thursday

MYAC's first official meeting will take place this Thursday, October 16th at 6:30 PM in the Police Training Room at City Hall. We have already met several times this year, however this upcoming meeting will be the first organized meeting with officers and MYAC's usual meeting procedures. MYAC members are encouraged to bring friends/siblings who might be interested in our cause.

Citizen's Academy

Want to learn about the workings of municipal government? Ever wondered where your tax dollars have gone and how they have been used to improve the City of Kendallville? Enroll for Kendallville's annual Citizen's Academy!

Kendallville's Citizens' Academy is open to anyone who is interested in the how and why of local government. The comprehensive course takes place every Monday night from September into November.

All MYAC Members are urged, however not required, to take this course. All interested citizens need to fill out a form and turn it into City Hall prior to the first course on September the 8th, 2014. A minimum of 5 persons are required.

MYAC Operating Popcorn Stand This Weekend

The Mayor's Youth Advisory Council (that's us!) will be operating the iconic Popcorn Stand on William Street, west of Main Street, this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Aug. 22, 23, 24) from 5:00 until 8:30 PM. Proceeds will go towards the purchasing of new playground equipment and MYAC's general fund!

First Meeting of the 2014-2015 Year

MYAC's first meeting will take place on September the 4th, at 6:30. The meeting will be at Kendallville City Hall, in the Police Training Room on the third floor. (Right from the Stairs) Teens grades 6 thru 12 are welcome to come by and learn about MYAC and what we do! 

ELIGIBILITY 

Persons interested in becoming a member of MYAC must be in Jr High or High School, and must reside in Noble County.

New Tornado Siren = Increased Warning

Last week, shortly before our last meeting, MYAC members took a short drive down main street to see the outdoor siren MYAC, along with the Kendallville Fire Department, had worked so hard to save up for last year with Operation Paul Revere.

The new outdoor warning siren has a battery backup which means that, in the event of a power outage, the siren will still be able to sound. Outdoor warning sirens are typically sounded during the event of severe weather, however they can also sound for other reasons too, such as during the event of a civil emergency.

The siren is situated next to the intersection of East Waits Road and Main Street. This means that the residences of mobile home parks nearby should be able to hear the siren loud and clear. It is very important for citizens to acknowledge that, even if you can hear the sirens indoors, you should not depend on them to warn you in the event of severe weather. Emergency Managers and the Federal Government highly advise all citizens in tornado-prone areas buy NOAA Weather Radios which can be found for about $30.00.

The old siren is to be reused in locations of our community which don't have good siren coverage after the Fire Department determines it is still functional. To the left is a view of the old siren according to Google Street View.

Given Kendallville's growth since Operation Paul Revere's initial launch, the Fire Chief says Kendallville needs five more sirens, as opposed to the original seven. These sirens can cost up to $28,000.00 each!

Outdoor warning sirens are an important safety measure for keeping people warned during severe weather, even with the modern technology we have today. Let's keep warning our communities for generations to come!
